In this episode, I discuss addiction, the current solutions for solving addictions (ie: evading your smartphone), why they don't work, and my experiment to solve the problem backed by what I call context theory.
Here's the gist of it:
- Our brains create context for us in all of the different situations we encounter in life (based on place, time, the people around, etc)
- Devices are contextless; they show us the same apps and tools everywhere we go, regardless of what we're doing
- We are horrifically bad context enforcers within the context of an unbounded device
The solution? Create and enforce your own contexts. Make it as easy as possible on yourself.

The Second Device
For my experiment, I picked up a discounted iPhone 7 at Best Buy. You don't need to buy a new phone to create your own contexts if you already have an old one sitting around or if you have something like a tablet. You could also buy a second device on eBay for cheap.
Regardless of how you obtain a second device, the money is well spent if you use it to successfully curb your addiction.
